Get ready for the 4th with 4 of our favorite 4th of July activities (BESIDES THE FIREWORKS, OF COURSE)!

1.  Festive Food.  Use your imagination and add a touch of red, white and blue food to your 4th of July BBQ!  Red tomato and mozzarella skewers, star shaped watermelon slices or skewers of blueberries, strawberries make your 4th of July BBQ especially thematic!

2.  Fun Fourth Crafts.  Have kids?  Come up with some fun, safe ways to educate children about the holiday. We all know that the 4th marks the birthday of the United States but did you know that the Declaration of Independence was actually adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 and that our celebration and fireworks today were actually intended by our founding fathers?  John Adams, one of the founders of our new nation, said,

“I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward for evermore.”

Celebrate our nation’s birthday with your kids the way our founding fathers intended by making these fun, festive “rockets” by Carolyn’s Homework, and write your own personal birthday message on the side!
